In a world increasingly shaped by fragmentation and misunderstanding, the ability to communicate across cultural and cognitive boundaries is more essential than ever. My journey into this vital field—international communication—was not a mere academic decision. It was a personal transformation that began more than two decades ago, at Coventry University (CU).
In September 2002, after twelve years of professional experience and with modest savings, I made the life-changing decision to pursue a Master’s degree in International Communication at Coventry University’s School of Art and Design. Looking back, that decision marked a profound turning point in my life.
At CU, I found not just a classroom, but a world of ideas. Under the guidance of Dr. Shaun Hides, the postgraduate program head, and the mentorship of Dr. Katharine Sarikakis, I was introduced to the theoretical foundations and global implications of communication. More importantly, I learned how communication can shape perceptions, bridge divides, and open doors to mutual understanding across nations and cultures. These insights did more than influence my studies—they redefined my life’s purpose.
Since then, I have dedicated my career to international communication, working to foster dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation across borders. Today, I serve as a professor at the School of International Communication and Arts at Hainan University, and as the founder and editor-in-chief of Communication Without Borders (CWB)—a platform committed to enhancing cognitive literacy and promoting transboundary understanding.
None of this would have been possible without the transformative experience I had at CU. The university did more than equip me with knowledge; it awakened a lifelong commitment to building bridges where others see barriers.
To Coventry University, and to the dedicated educators who shaped my journey—I offer my deepest gratitude.
May Coventry University continue to inspire future generations to see beyond boundaries and strive for a more connected, compassionate world.
